Depression Treatment: Sexual assault abuse and EMDR

Sexual violence and sexual assault abuse, which affects one in three women worldwide, can result in significant psychiatric morbidity, depression, and even suicide. Eye movement desensitization and reprogramming (EMDR), used by Terri Clinton Dichiser Overland Park Kansas, has been extensively researched in depression treatment and proven effective. EMDR therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma.

Sexual abuse is any form of sexual violence, including rape, child molestation, incest, and similar forms of non-consensual sexual contact. Most sexual abuse experts agree sexual abuse is never only about sex. Instead, it is often an attempt to gain power over victims. Sexual abuse teaches victims that their bodies are not really their own. Through EMDR and depression treatment, Terri takes an assessment to help her understand the patient’s issues more thoroughly.

One of the mental health challenges survivors of sexual abuse face includes depression, and the loss of bodily autonomy is often difficult to cope with. It can create feelings of hopelessness, despondency, and lead to one’s diminished sense of self-worth. These feelings can lead to depression that may range from mild and fleeting to intense and debilitating. Through the assessment with Terri, she develops a regimen for depression treatment with EMDR.

The goal with depression treatment and EMDR is to treat the pain with the ultimate goal being the patient’s emotional well-being. Though EMDR is a fairly new therapy, used for sexual assault and depression treatment, and also other issues, EMDR has been validated by more than 20 randomized, controlled clinical trials for therapy.

With individual depression treatment, EMDR involves a patient’s own rapid, cadenced eye movement, lessening the influence of sexual assault abuse and depression. Terri, Take Charge Inc. Overland Park, Kansas, is certified and has received extensive training in EMDR, from depression from sexual assault abuse to panic attacks and relationship problems.
